Sidecar Doughnuts Driving Food Trends Up and Down 17th Street

Every month I head down to 17th Street in the Newport/Costa Mesa area to get my nails done. I do it for me all despite the long-ish 18 mile drive each way (not to mention the cost of gas). C hates this as he says it’s a huge waste of time and money. Sorry, hon, but I love it. I love it because I get to drive in my car along beautiful PCH all alone, enjoy the amazing ocean views, and listen to whatever I want on my car stereo (my choice!). Or heck, I can even make an occasional uninterrupted phone call. Imagine that, RMT’ers! Yes, it’s a blissful way to spend a Tuesday morning every four weeks or so, and I rarely miss this date with myself. My sanity is well worth it.

Located on 17th Street in Costa Mesa, Sidecar Doughnuts is tucked away in a mini-mall next to another pie bakery. The "anchor"is Starbucks, and across the street is Bruxie, the waffle-themed restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Basically, Sidecar is perfectly placed along a corridor of cool, cutting-edge culinary delights.

Basically, Sidecar is perfectly placed along a corridor of cool, cutting-edge culinary delights. Eat up, RMT’ers!

After my nail appointment last month, I was hungry but unsure exactly what it was I was craving. Sweet? Savory? Both? Decisions, decisions, decisions. Well, lucky for me, my nail gal and foodie friend recommended Sidecar Doughnuts.

This isn’t your usual doughnut shop, RMT’ers. There are choices ranging from a Madagascar Vanilla Twist (that’s anything but the usual glazed twist doughnut despite its outward appearance) to the now-popular Maple Bacon raised doughnut (and you know I love me a maple bacon doughnut). Sidecar even offered up a variety of pie-style doughnuts (which all resembled a mini-pie made inside the hole and on top of a raised doughnut). The flavors are in season, on-trend, and in hot demand. But despite all of the unique and tempting options available, my choice was clear. I knew exactly what I was going to try: The Green Eggs and Ham.

To steal a line from Carrie Bradshaw, "Hello lover." No, they're not shoes but they're about as sexy and comfortable as breakfast food can get, RMT'ers.

The first time I tried the Green Eggs and Ham I used a fork and knife. What an amateur move that was. It's not necessary at all. Keep reading.

Green Eggs and Ham is a “filled”-style raised doughnut with a poached egg, basil Hollandaise sauce, and ham baked inside someway, somehow. It truly is the perfect breakfast food for anyone undecided on savory or sweet. It’s both, in balance, but not overtly so. The doughnut isn’t coated in glaze or sugar; it just has the touch of sweetness that a plain raised doughnut has (think unfrosted side of a bar doughnut). And of course, the innards are pure savory perfection but not TOO rich either. Together, they marry to create a melt-in-the-mouth, munch-a-rific meal that defies doughnut definition, to be honest.

I don’t know how Sidecar does this Green Eggs and Ham doughnut, and I really don’t care. Just please keep doing it after today. Please? No? Yes, sadly, according to their social media and their official website, tomorrow (Saturday December 7, 2013) may be the last day for Green Eggs and Ham for a long, long while.

I don’t like that, no way ma’am. I do not like that, damn, damn, damn.

Yes, that box was full... "was" being the key word there. On my second trip I tried a Salt and Butter along with my Green Eggs and Ham, and I brought T the Traditional Vanilla Twist. There may have also been another Pumpkin Spice or two in there, too, since those are limited seasonally as well.

Yes, that box was full… “was” being the key word there. On my second trip I also picked up a Butter & Salt (very much like an “Old Fashioned” or buttermilk bar, but with more defined vanilla notes) along with my Green Eggs and Ham, and I got T a Madagascar Vanilla Twist. There may have also been another Pumpkin Spice or two in there, too (limited seasonally, likely off-menu by the time this post published). Please note that the menu changes monthly so check Sidecar’s social media posts or their website for details if you have particular needs and tastes.

But I also know that after having had the Green Eggs and Ham (along with trying the Maple Bacon and Pumpkin Spice doughnuts… yes, on the same day!), I knew I had to get back well before four weeks passed by again where I’d be in the neighborhood to stop off and have it again. I am glad I decided to make a special trip – 36 miles round-trip – just 10 days after that initial visit to get it and then some while they were hot (literally!). Best. Doughnut. Decision. Ever.

T was thankful that I remembered him during my second visit to Sidecar Doughnuts. You're welcome, T.
