The classes explored the joy of movement while improving balance and gross motor skills. Children participated in developmentally appropriate Dance and Art classes each day, all while gaining confidence and making new friends. Camp for boys and girls, kids ages 3-5, and will were held in July for one week only from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. On the Friday of the camp, family and friends were invited to an informal performance at 12:30 p.m. to round out the week! ***UPDATED FOR 2019!!!*** Touted on its flier as “The best camp at the best price,” Tom Hicks Baseball Camps are back for their 30th year in 2019! I was reminded about this camp from a flier that Mr. Hicks personally handed to me at one of our Little League games in Spring 2015. We enrolled that summer and have each season since! Every Little League coach we’ve met to date has raved about Tom Hicks and his camps (my husband included – he heard him speak at a coaches clinic and was quite impressed). Sponsored by Diamond Sports, these camps for all skill levels are for boys and girls, tweens, and teens ages 5-14 are five separate 5-day/ week-long sessions 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the 2019 dates are as follows: June 24-June 28; July 8-12; July 15-19; July 22-26; and July 29-August 2. Wardlow Park “Pee Wee” Day Camp
(via Long Beach Parks, Recreation, and Marine)
3457 Stanbridge Ave.
Long Beach, CA 90808
562 570 1705

***2019 REGISTRATION is OPEN ONLINE NOW!!!*** Ten fun-filled weeks of day camp will be offered from June 17 through August 23 for kids ages 5-8. Cost is $115 per week (DEAL ALERT – RMT’ers, I know I said I stopped advertising prices for camps this year, but I have to tell you… this price has only gone up a total of $10 in FIVE YEARS); extended care at an additional cost also available. All sessions are weekly, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Each week offers at least one different off-site excursion where kids are transported via bus (sometimes LB Transit is used); some excursions costs are included in weekly tuition, others TBD, and range anywhere from a mid-day trip to the municipal swimming pool to an all-day trip to a local amusement park! Early and late supervision offered at additional charge. Please contact the park office and ask for Rhiannon (Director of Pee Wee Camp Programs) with any questions about their program or for other enrollment details, or simply enroll online! What we liked most about this program (T attended Summers 2013-2016 – we aged out years ago and are still sad about it!) was the age range, day length (hard to find a full day, all-inclusive price for five-year-olds!), and program and staff longevity. I am also always eager to support our local parks and recreation department any way possible.

If you have a suggestion for this list, or your organization’s summer camp program would like to be included and/or updated in the list above, please email me at: realmomtime@gmail.com. It’s FREE! The camps with titles marked above with *** contacted me personally or other parents recommended them to be listed, and HEY! now they are! Special thanks to the free community publication KidsGuide Magazine for information on several of the listings above. I also thank myself for a few hours of internet research and am grateful to many other various friends, peers, and community members for the majority of the above recommendations (you know who you are)! DISCLAIMER: A camp’s listing here is not indicative of any endorsement by myself and/or RMT; please do your own research and choose what works best for your kid(s) and family and contact camp(s) directly to verify all details posted.

    • Hmm… my guess is one has to do with appreciation of the types of music, and the other has to do with the different approaches to how certain types of music comes to be made, instruments used, etc. However, it’s probably best to phone Jammin’ Music (if that’s the location of these two courses) and ask to speak with Mr. Geoffrey. He should be able to better answer your question than I can (he’s the owner and instructor of most of the courses there). Good luck and let me know the answer, too! Thanks for reading and have fun picking your summer camps!

  1. This is a fantastic post, thank you so much. I was in a pinch to find a camp for my daughter next week and found one using your site. I thought I knew most of them but there are some new ones here I hadn’t heard of.
Some other additions that my two kids have done:
Long Beach Shakespeare Company summer camp-in Bixby Knolls
    American Gymnastics Academy-Signal Hill
    The Dance Company-Lakewood Village

    • Thanks for your kind feedback (and the follow)! If you don’t mind sharing and giving a shout-out to the organization, what camp worked out for you guys? I will be sure to add your other recommendations to the list next year as well (and to think we are at AGA for weekly classes – oops for overlooking that one!). Have a wonderful rest of the summer!

  2. Thank you for this post. We spent last summer in Long Beach and I couldn’t get into most camps because we got there too late. This summer I’ll be prepared!

  3. This is a great website!!! Thank you!! I am looking through my phone so you may already have this but one suggestion would be to categorize camps by age groups. (Pre-k, grade school, middle). Again thank you!

  4. Thanks so much for the list! One group of camps you might want to add to the list are the YMCA day camps. There’s a few locations close to LB

Not sure if it’d be easy to do, but one thing that might be useful to myself and others is if the camps are separated by partial day and full day. A lot of camps are only 3 hours, but if you’re a parent looking for childcare while you’re at work, full day is usually neededd. Just a thought 🙂

    Thanks again!

    • Thanks for your recommendation and additional suggestions! Definitely will consider all for next year for sure if I have some more time. 🙂 Good luck choosing camps for your kiddo(s) this season!

  5. This was the best list I have yet to find thank you. Is there such a thing as free summer camp for an eleven year old girl?

    • YES! Believe it or not, Long Beach Parks Rec and Marine offers “Summer Fun Days” camps at many parks around Long Beach. We have participated at Wardlow Park in the past, and their program is for ages 5-12 and the hours have been 10a-4p (no early-late care; camps usually are non-custodial also). For more information at Wardow Park you may call their rec center directly at 562 570 1706 and ask for Rhiannon – let them know Kristen referred you! 🙂 Happy Summer!

  6. Thank you for this list! Discovered it last spring when we began searching for “fun things for the kiddos to do over Summer while the parents have to work.” We ended up trying the Los Alamitos Youth Center last Summer and my girls, now 9 and 10, loved it and asked to go back this year. Great Camp and cannot beat the price! This year we are also adding the Groundlings recommended here as well. We have also tried the Girl Scout Camps with some of their friends and found them to be very good as well. Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles at El Ranchito near Lakewood and also Marine Landing which has swimming every day! Thanks again!

    • I am glad the list helped you 🙂 There are a handful of local camps I don’t generally advertise for due to their already immense popularity and tendency to sell out very early on in the season (Scouts falls into that category). I am still working on my list and doing one final pass in the next few weeks so please pass along any other suggestions you might think of!
