I learned about this smaller studio all thanks to our school’s spring fundraiser and a friend winning a week of their camp (thanks for the donation, Kristin!). From their website: “Wise Art Studio is a creative art space that is dedicated to providing a positive, inspiring, and safe environment for artists of all ages to learn and explore their imaginations. We provide a large variety of mediums, materials, and techniques.” Summer camps in the past have operated June-through-August (check website for exact weeks), Mondays-through-Thursdays from 1:30-to-3:30 p.m. and were geared toward children ages 6-to-12. Class size limited in number for a more focused and fun approach. 2016 Pricing: Cost is $140 per student per session, with a sibling discount available for same session of $120 per additional child (reserve your spot with a $50 deposit!). For more information or to register, please contact the studio directly.
***NEW TO THE LIST IN 2016!!!*** If you’ve been a reader of the RMT blog for any length of time, then you may recall that I have some personal experience with the Xtend Barre studio in Seal Beach, so I am more than happy to help promote their summer dance camp program for kids! In 2016, camp was offered for boys and girls ages 5-to-12 for one week only in August from 1-to-4 p.m. Cost for the full week was $200 (included supplies and snack), or you could enroll a camper for any three days of camp for $126 (sibling discount of $10 off enrollment). Themes varied daily, from ballet to hip-hop. You may find more details on their calendar for upcoming camps or classes, and you may enroll online here.
***UPDATED FOR 2017!!!*** The Young Americans are coming to Long Beach, CA this summer! From their website and flier: “Open to students grades 3rd-College in the surrounding area. This high-energy, comprehensive performing arts summer camp includes instruction, classes, and workshops in voice, dance, comedy improvisation, songwriting, performance techniques, sound, lighting, and master classes from industry professionals. Participants are divided into three age groups to learn age appropriate material. By learning a show in just 5 days, students are able to learn teamwork, discover their individual potential, and walk away with a huge sense of accomplishment at the end of the week, all in an encouraging and positive atmosphere that The Young Americans foster and provide.” Camp will be held at the above location for one week only from Tuesday June 20-through-Saturday June 24, 9 a.m.-to 5 p.m.; the show camp date is Saturday June 24 from 1 p.m.-to-8 p.m. Camp cost is only $210 for five days, which includes a camp T-shirt; see website for discounts and scholarship information (TIP: You can save $50 per camper when you house a few of their cast members during the week of camp; please email email@example.com to get more information. You can also sign up during the registration process.). Show tickets will be sold at various times throughout the week before and after camp. For more information and details, please visit their website, and go online to register here.
So… Want to know where T went attended camp last summer, RMT’ers? Then check out these next couple camps! (Please note: These are camps where T spent time during the past few summers (2013-15.)
Shared Science offers several different week-long sessions of summer day camp all part-day in length (now at various locations throughout Long Beach!). Campers gain knowledge and experience in various engineering and robotics sciences through the construction of LEGOs and other materials. Scratch programming is also offered for older campers starting in Grade 3. NEW FOR 2016 is a joint camp with the USS Iowa Battleship located in San Pedro (tuition for entire week $250)! From their Facebook page: “We’ll co-host a week of camp (aboard the USS Iowa) in July, Monday-through-Thursday 10 a.m.-to-3 p.m. for students grades 3-6 interested in exploring the science behind Battleships. Morning LEGO engineering activities exploring simple machines, geared motors. Afternoons include activities around the ship investigating water depth, missile trajectory, submersibles and more! July 21-to-22 SPECIAL OVERNIGHT: Stay on board the USS Iowa! Live the life of a Battleship sailor Thursday night. Dinner provided. Pancake breakfast Friday morning before departing at 8:30 a.m. Parent or Guardian required to accompany student guests during overnight program.” I think if you follow the blog at all, it’s obvious why we enrolled in these camps year after year (that and it was by far the most reasonably priced camp involving LEGOs). You can read about one of our previous camp experiences with Shared Science here. 2017 Summer Camp details to be announced. Thanks again to Miss Michelle and Mr. E for a great week filled with learning and fun times!
Tom Hicks Baseball Camps

Long Beach, CA 90815-0963
***UPDATED FOR 2017!!!*** Touted on its flier as “The best camp at the best price,” Tom Hicks Baseball Camps are back for their 28th year in 2017! I was reminded about this camp from a flier that Mr. Hicks personally handed to me at one of our Little League games in Spring 2015. Every Little League coach we’ve met to date has raved about Tom Hicks and his camps (my husband included – he heard him speak at a coaches clinic and was quite impressed). Sponsored by Diamond Sports, these camps are five separate 5-day/ week-long sessions 9 a.m.-to-3 p.m., and the 2017 dates are as follows: June 26-June 30; July 10-14; July 17-21; July 24-28; and July 31-August 4. Camps are operated by experienced, professional coaches with excellent student-teacher ratios. Multiple week discounts are available for these intensive, non-competitive camps for boys and girls ages 5-to-14 years at all skill levels beginner to advanced. 2017 rates are $125 for a five-day session, which included 30 hours of instruction time (early bird registration rate of $120 if you register before June 1); early drop-off and late pickup hours offered with hitting instruction for extended enrollment price of just $45 per camper for those 10 extra hours/week; multiple session discounts also offered (see all pricing breakdowns here). Long Beach camps are held at Heartwell Park (corner of Carson St. and Palo Verde Ave.). For more information, please contact Tom Hicks directly at the information above (email not known). PS – We enrolled T in this camp during Summers 2015 and 2016 and plan to again for multiple weeks in 2017, and you can read all about our awesome and amazing experience in 2015 here.
***UPDATED FOR 2017!!!*** Offering 10 weeks of day camp from June 19-through-August 28 for ages 5-to-8-years-old. Cost is $105 per week; weeks are five-day blocks, Monday-through-Friday, 9 a.m.-to-4 p.m. Each week offers at least one different off-site excursion where kids are transported via bus (sometimes LB Transit is used); some excursions costs are included in weekly tuition, others TBD, and range anywhere from a trip to the municipal swimming pool to a day-trip to Knott’s Berry Farm! Early and late supervision offered at additional charge. Please contact the park office and ask for Rhiannon (Director of Pee Wee Camp Programs) with any questions about their program or for other enrollment details, or simply enroll online! What we liked most about this program (T attended Summers 2013-2016 – we have aged out and are still sad about it!) was the age range, day length (hard to find a full day, all-inclusive price for five-year-olds!), program and staff longevity, and cost ($105 for one week full-day M-F!). I also am happy to support our local parks and recreation department any way possible.
