I was going through my photo archives this week, and I realized that I never followed up on T’s soccer season this past winter! Oops, sorry about that! Well, here are a few photos for you to enjoy. And, yes, as some of the photos depict, it was a chilly season also (brrr!). Oh how I miss that weather already (says the blogger typing under a blustery a/c vent while it’s hot and breeze-less outside).

Week one of soccer for T! Here they are racing to the different colored posts on the edge around the field to practice kicking and running skills.

Week three of winter soccer season was COLD! Yes, I am wearing a parka… or at least a parka by So Cal standards!

Week five introduced the “Star Wars” game of kicking the ball at the Death Star soccer ball. The kids LOVED it!

Great action shot of T! He had to jump and run through a gauntlet of other kids kicking soccer balls at him. I think he made it through at least once!
T did the parks and rec class again here in Long Beach, which was another great experience for all of us. Developmentally, I found that these clinic-style, skills- and game-based classes were a much better fit for us at this younger age than shoving him into competitive team leagues starting at age three (you can see this post for how I really feel about that), which for whatever reason is a very popular thing to do in this area. However, having said that, and now with a few seasons of these classes under T’s cleats, I think that next fall we all will be ready to find a starter league to get involved in (he’ll be six-years-old by then also).
And it’s also fitting that I post these soccer updates from a few months ago just as T-ball summer season gets started for us! We were lucky to find another parks-and-rec sponsored program this summer, which is a free, skills-based, T-ball league that sets the focus on not just skills and learning the game but also on having fun. We are playing for Wardlow Park this summer, and T is having a ball so far! We’ve had a few practices so far, and the first game of the season was last Wednesday, or the week we were on vacation (whoops), but T’s first game that he attended was this week!
After the first game I asked T what his favorite part was. “The pitching,” he said. Please again note we’re playing T-ball here.
There are four more games to go, plus one practice per week. It’s a nice, short season with a laid-back enough of a schedule that will allow T to decide if he wants to commit to a longer season come next spring (or over fall in lieu of soccer… I guess we’ll see which sport wins out!). This small league really is also a great bridge between the t-ball class we did previously and a step-up in league play. We are grateful to have gotten one of the highly coveted spots!

Great game, everyone! No, they don’t keep score (it’s a bit too chaotic for all that), but the kids are having a great time learning about the game and having fun this summer!
I’ll post more T-ball photos (and more quickly next time) once our season gets into full-swing! Until then, hope your weekend is a grand-slam!
