Pink, On the Rocks: Madonna Inn, San Luis Obispo, CA

The Madonna Inn's roadside signage beckons weary travelers in from US-101 in San Luis Obispo, CA.

On our way home from our California road trip earlier this month, we made sure to exit US-101 in San Luis Obispo, CA, for a lunch break at the landmark Madonna Inn. If you are not familiar with this VERY pink roadside attraction, please do get acquainted next time you are anywhere near the area. She’s a natural beauty in her own special way.

Even the entrance to the Madonna Inn is over-the-top fabulous with its carved wood and stained glass.

It's a lover's holiday every day at the lovely Madonna Inn!

The Madonna Inn is an homage to anything and everything over-the-top, pink, and gaudy, but in the very best way that you could ever imagine. The photos tell it all, and please don’t let Valentine’s Day trick you into thinking this was all just for a special occasion. Every day at the Madonna Inn is a holiday, RMT’ers, especially if you’re lucky enough to spend the night.

Several years ago during our pre-T era (yes, RMT’ers, it seems that long ago to call it an era!), C and I spent a weekend in the Central Coast area of California. On that trip we had the pleasure of staying overnight in the Madonna Inn’s Irish Hills room. Little did we know what we were in for… I guess you could say we were green to the concept of just how over-the-top the room decor would be, especially in the case of our particular room!

Our view from the counter during lunch at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA.

I won’t lie, our lunch was just average. But trust me, we didn’t stop here because we were looking for the best meal of our lives or of our trip for that matter. However the food was great diner-style grub that satisfied our appetites and got us the rest of the four-hour ride back home.

The Madonna Inn's bakery was flush with heart-shaped cakes in honor of Valentine's Day. T was so sad we could not get one of these to-go, but their cookies traveled much better and allowed us a little snack in the car on the way home.

Our quick-stop also allowed for us to pick up some cookies to-go from their delicious bakery, which is definitely above-average. We settled for some oatmeal butterscotch, chocolate chip, and peanut butter cookies to nosh on for our ride home along the coast, though after tasting them I’m doing a disservice by saying we settled at all. They were chewy, fresh and full of all that sort of lovely goodness that I’d expect from a bakery pushing heart-shaped cakes.

The men's bathroom and its infamous rock waterfall urinal at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA. No, the boys didn't snap this photo for me, RMT'ers... I was just one of THREE women peeking inside to snap a shot of the men's bathroom during this visit!

Oh, and of course before saying goodbye to the majestic Madonna Inn, we made sure to ask T if he needed to use the bathroom. Now mind you, T loves the “daddy bathroom” because of the “waterfalls” (i.e., urinals), so it wasn’t a hard sell when we told T that this bathroom  was the waterfall to beat all waterfalls. Yep, the Madonna Inn’s men’s restroom is infamous for its rock waterfall urinal, but then again you might have already known that.

Thanks for the memories... and the cookies!

So long for now, my lovely lady… and until we meet again, rock on with your pretty, pink self.
